Sepsis is an infection of the blood and if untreated can lead to serious and potentially fatal consequences. Sepsis and other infections are common in nursing home residents and must be taken seriously.

Nursing home staff members have an obligation to watch for signs of serious infection and to relay that information to the resident’s physician immediately so treatment can begin. Often, the quicker treatment is started, the better chance of recovery for the resident. If your loved one suffers from bedsores or other open wounds, he or she is at an increased risk for infection.

Signs of infection include:

• Confusion

• Fever and shaking/chills or a very low body temperature

• Decreased urination

• Nausea and vomiting

• Rapid breathing

• Diarrhea

If you notice any of the above signs, report it to a medical professional immediately.
