Nursing Home Falls Can
Result In Severe Injuries

Many nursing home residents are susceptible to falling due to mental and physical impairments. As a result, it is of the utmost importance for our loved ones to be monitored carefully by nursing home staff to help prevent falls and injury.

Brittle bones and compromised health make falls in the elderly even more troubling. Falls can result in fractured bones and brain injuries, both of which can be fatal. Nursing homes and other medical facilities have a duty to protect residents from preventable falls. The fact is, most falls are preventable with appropriate care and supervision by trained staff.

For a loved one who is at an increased risk for falling, make sure the nursing home staff:

• Monitors him or her closely

• Uses preventative measures such as bed alarms, floor mats, beds lowered to the floor and toileting schedules

• Considers other possible interventions that you should discuss with your health care professional
